We’re grateful for your interest in applying to become a UVUSA Department Representative! Since they focus their efforts on one particular department, department reps have the essential responsibility of serving as the most personal and individualized level of the academic senate, which is the branch of UVUSA that seeks to represent the student voice in academic matters, allowing all UVU students to have a say in their education.

In the time that I’ve worked with the great people who serve in UVUSA this year, I’ve seen the difference that dedicated efforts to represent student voice can have on UVU as a whole. I’ve been impressed as I’ve heard stories about department reps who went above and beyond this year to make a difference for their fellow students.

We have a deep need for students who are passionate about UVU, their education, their major, and representing the wants and needs of the students around them. We need students who, through their own experiences and by talking with others around them, have a thorough understanding of the problems that they and their fellow students are facing, as well as the positive aspects of their program that they want to see stick around.

As a department representative, you would be the student advocate for your department, and you would have the opportunity to make a lasting difference. You would get to work closely with the senator for your college, other department representatives, and your department chair. You would be able to develop a relationship with all of them. This would be a great opportunity to grow as an individual and serve the students within your department.

You would be working on a team with your senator and other department representatives from your college. So we need students who are self-motivated, accountable, open-minded, authentic, ambitious, and eager to serve and learn. We need you to bring your different experiences to the table and advocate for your department. We need your help in order to make a difference this year.

• Read all application materials thoroughly.
• Complete Application, Agreements, and Reference Sheet
• Answer all application questions
• After applications are received they will be reviewed by the Selection Committee (Vice President of Academics, Student Senate Coordinator, and the Senator for the college or school where your department falls) and narrowed down for possible interviews.
• Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by the appropriate UVUSA Senator.

The UVUSA Student Senate works directly with the Deans and administration of each college/school to represent the student body through outreach, surveys, forms, sitting on department steering committees, and may also assist with special projects or needs within each college/school. The Department Representative is the ongoing representative for the student voice within their departments/majors.

Department Representatives meet with their Department Chairs monthly and report to the senator of their college/school. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Serves under the direction of the Senator for their college or school.
• Available every Tuesday from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. This time is used for All-Senate/Department Representative Meetings, meetings with individual Senators and their Department Representatives, and 1:1 meetings.
• Attends All-Senate/Department Representative Meetings, held every two weeks, on Tuesdays.
• Meet with Department Chair at least twice per month.
• Creates a UVU Campus Groups Account and maintains a record of volunteer hours.
• Actively pursues student feedback regarding specific academic college/school matters, campus programming, policy, and all other aspects of student life on campus.
• Acts as the voice of the students in their respective departments/majors.
• Attends student forums sponsored by the UVUSA Senate.
• Meets with the Senator for their college or school at least twice per month to update them on happenings within their department.
• Attend and assist with UVUSA outreach, surveys, and forums.
• Attend additional training as needed.
