Join us for engaging conversations on the intersections of art and medicine coordinated by Dr. Eliot Mostow (Chair, Dermatology Section, Dept. Internal Medicine at NEOMED), Akron Art Museum Director and CEO Jon Fiume and NEOMED faculty including Dr. Joseph Zarconi (Emeritus Chair, Dept. Internal Medicine) and Dr. Rachel Bracken (Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine).
After light refreshments, we will tour the museum and reflect on works that prompt discussion on the art of observation and ways we might apply this practice to our approach patient care. We will have time at the end to explore the collection as well!
There is a healing power of art, whether it be from transforming hospital walls into more comforting and uplifting spaces, or the release and solace that comes from creating art in its unique forms. By engaging in discussions about the pieces and the contexts in which they were made, we hope to create a welcoming space to learn from each other by sharing experiences in patient care.
Medical schools and residency programs nationwide have seen the value and impact of engaging with the arts to address common themes in medical practice and the humanistic dimensions of caregiving, from empathy and communication skills with patients and colleagues, to resiliency to physician burnout.
We welcome everyone to attend! No art experience or knowledge is required—just a curious, open mind and heart 😊
