Mizzou Bystander Intervention Initiative

Our campus is committed to creating a healthy and safe environment for all students. We are utilizing a new in-person training program, titled Mizzou Bystander Intervention Initiative to promote community connectedness and civic engagement with the overall goal being to empower students to engage in situations where they can prevent, reduce, or respond to harm. This is a transition from the Green Dot program, which focused specifically on issues of interpersonal violence. In contrast, the Mizzou Bystander Intervention Initiative works to address multiple, interconnected issues including alcohol and other drug use, issues of bias and discrimination, interpersonal violence, and mental well-being. For the ‘23- ‘24 academic year we will be marketing for student organizations, academic classes and units, as well as faculty and staff to request presentations in addition to offering open presentations for any member of the campus community to attend.

The 45–60-minute overview training covers:
Scenarios related to various types of violence/harm including 1) alcohol and other drug use, 2) bias and discrimination, 3) interpersonal violence, and 4) mental well-being.
The importance of being an engaged community member.
How students can be engaged community members in potentially harmful situations.
Challenges to acting as engaged community member
