Wilderness Advanced First Aid is comprehensive medical training designed for remote professionals or wilderness leaders who venture into remote and challenging environments. Wilderness Medicine differs significantly from standard first aid courses and other training that are oriented toward urban environments. This course teaches how to manage medical emergencies when hospitals and rescue services may not be available for an extensive time period. We prepare students for emergency situations that involve prolonged patient care, severe environments, and improvised equipment.
This course will be taught by professionals from Wilderness Medical Associates. After successful completion of all course requirements, participants will be issued a WMA Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification, which includes CPR certification.
This is a 36-hour course split across 4 days. In order to become certified, 100% attendance of all 4 days is required. This fulfills the first aid (and CPR) training component for OA Leaders.
4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Creating a safe space to operate programs, both physical safety and psychological safety, requires understanding the dynamics that create unsafe situations. The Managing Safety Workshop will provide you with an understanding of how to evaluate and manage risk potential by identifying hazard factors and implementing safety factors that address increasing risk levels whether it is creating a safe environment in a physical setting like a team project, international travel or outdoor trip. Managing risk is a dynamic process of identifying and evaluating hazards (‘the bad stuff’) and implementing a series of positive factors like training, site management, policies and procedures, and traveler judgment (‘the good stuff’) to counterbalance both expected and unexpected risks.
Particularly applicable to anyone traveling in remote locations, backpacking or required to manage safety of others
Fulfills the Outdoor Action Managing Safety Leader Training requirement. Managing Safety is being offered multiple times-- you only need to register for one iteration of the workshop.
