Title of Talk: "78 Degrees of Queerness: Reading Gender and Sexuality in the Tarot"

Synopsis: Tarot is a system of 78 illustrated cards with different historical and contemporary applications ranging from divination to entertainment and artistic inspiration. The experience of receiving a tarot reading is often likened to gazing in a mirror or stumbling upon a roadmap: those consulting the cards can explore existing mental and emotional blocks with greater clarity and consider ways to integrate these insights into everyday routines. Building upon Rachel Pollack's canonical introduction to the cards titled 78 Degrees of Wisdom, Roksana Filipowska draws on queer studies and tarot theory, as well as her experience as a third-generation tarot reader to introduce how this spiritual tool opens modalities for navigating queer desire, kinship, and livelihood. The virtual talk will include ample time for questions and discussion, as well as a short tarot reading for attendees. No prior experience of the tarot is necessary.

Bio: Roksana Filipowska, Ph.D., is a researcher, educator, writer, and third-generation tarot reader interested in the intersections of art, science, and spirituality. Filipowska completed her Ph.D. in Art History at the University of Pennsylvania and is the Wurtele Study Center Programs and Outreach Manager at the Yale University Art Gallery. She was recently featured on Gender Jawn, the podcast of the Center for Research in Feminist, Queer, and Transgender Studies at UPenn, in the episode "Queerness, Gender & Sexuality in the Tarot" (February 2021), and has shared the tarot with hundreds of clients, often redistributing her tarot earnings through networks of mutual aid.
