H.E. Abdulla Shahid, President of the United Nations General Assembly comes in person to SIPA share how the UN works toward protecting the planet, recovering from COVID-19, and building a UN that is fit to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

Columbia students, faculty and staff may attend in person; others please join us virtually. Please see the different registration options. A light lunch will be served. 

Speaker bio
H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid serves as President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr. Shahid is from the Republic of Maldives and has served as Member of Parliament, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Speaker of the People's Majlis, and since 2018 Minister of Foreign Affairs (for the second time). Previously, he served as foreign service officer, directed the Multilateral Department in the Maldives’  Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and served as negotiator at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna in 1993. He also served as the President of the conference of the Association of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Speakers and Parliamentarians.
Mr. Shahid holds a master’s degree in International Relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Government at the University of Canberra.
