What are the roles, impacts, and limitations of technology for cities? Please join us on Tuesday, March 8, from 1 pm to 1:50 pm for an insightful discussion on Smart Cities: Technology, Innovation, and Urban Futures with Professor Ben Green from the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan and Riad Meddeb, Director a.i. of UNDP’s Global Centre on Technology, Innovation and Sustainable Development in Singapore.

Green draws on his recent book The Smart Enough City (2019, MIT Press) to warn against seeing the city only through the lens of technology. He argues to embrace technology as a powerful tool in conjunction with other forms of social change. Meddeb shows how the work of the United Nations Development Programme and its newly launched Smart City Handbook on Smart Urban Innovations promote ‘smart cities’ that are not only about better decision-making and better data but that also promote access, equity and fairness for participation in urban processes and that reduce vulnerability and redundancies during moments of crisis.

The talk will be moderated by Professor Yumi Shimabukuro, director of SIPA's Urban & Social Policy Program of the Executive MPA and director a.i. of United States Specialization.
