Columbia SIPA, Columbia Law School, and the Center on Global Economic Governance are pleased to present this launch event honoring Professor Richard N. Gardner's monumental impact on Columbia and the world, and celebrating the establishment of the new professorship in his name, to be filled by its founding professor, Jan Svejnar.

The event will include welcome addresses by Dean of Columbia SIPA, Merit Janow, and Dean of Columbia Law, Gillian Lester, a special address by Nina Gardner, Richard Gardner's daughter and Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and remarks by Jan Svejnar, the founding holder of the chair.

These brief remarks will be followed by a distinguished panel discussion, entitled "What Kind of Economic Policy and Diplomacy Can Meet the Challenges of the New Global World?".

Richard Gardner's life work was focused on teaching and diplomacy in the areas of international trade and economic policy. In this post-Covid 19, post COP-26 new normal, with tensions mounting both internally and internationally, can current economic policy, trade policy, and diplomacy still provide effective solutions in meeting our new global challenges?

The panel will include leading faculty at Columbia SIPA and Law School grappling with these issues:

Thomas Christensen, James T. Shotwell Professor of International Relations

Nina Gardner, Adjunct Professor, Johns Hopkins SAIS

Jacob Lew, Visiting Professor of International and Public Affairs, Columbia SIPA

Katharina Pistor, Edwin B. Parker Professor of Comparative Law

Jeffrey Sachs, University Professor; Director, Center for Sustainable Development in the Earth Institute

Jan Svejnar (Moderator), Richard N. Gardner Professor of Economics and International Affairs; Director, Center on Global Economic Governance
