Join the Leir Institute for a book talk with Leir-affiliated faculty Professor Anjuli Falberg about her award-winning book Activism under Fire: The Politics of Non-Violence in Rio de Janeiro's Gang Territories (Oxford University Press).

Dr. Anjuli Fahlberg, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tufts University, studies social movements, violence, and development in Latin America and conducts participatory action research in areas of violence and conflict. She is the co-director of the Building Together Research Collective, based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which collaborates with favela residents to co-lead research on violence, social development, and resilience. She is currently leading a new research project in Central America examining how governance impacts urban violence and anti-violence organizing, in collaboration with a team of Central American activists and residents.

Her recently published book, “Activism under Fire: The Politics of Non-Violence in Rio de Janeiro’s Gang Territories” (Oxford University Press, 2023), examines how activists mobilize for their citizenship rights in a context of gang and police violence and recently received the Brazilian Studies Association book award.
