To kick off the event, keynote speaker, Tori Svoboda, will touch on this year's first-generation college celebration theme, growth.

Associate Professor, M.S.Ed. Program Director, Student Affairs Administration Department Chair

Tori is a former first-gen student and current first-gen faculty member with a 30-year career in higher education. She worked as a practitioner in higher education (advising, admissions, equity/inclusion, orientation, sexual violence prevention) for a few decades before transitioning to full-time faculty life in the last third of her career. These days, Tori teaches in a graduate program for those who want to work in colleges. Her research focuses on the ways in which college / higher education common practices can be alienating to students from working-class backgrounds. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family (including two dogs), studying and teaching yoga, and watching really trashy TV. (She also hates writing bios, since they're usually just long lists of degrees and awards and past presentations and jobs, and she hates feeling like she's too full of herself).
