cultural items to descendant communities throughout the United States. This initiative,
which began over a decade ago, has gained renewed momentum due to recent campus
policy (UC Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy), state
legislation (calNAGPRA), and updated regulations to the federal NAGPRA (Native
American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). This presentation aims to explore the
impact of these laws and policies on research and education at UCSB, strategies for
initiating consultation and building relationships with Native Nations, and the steps taken
by UCSB to honor Indigenous heritage and address historical injustices.
