Yusaku Nakabeppu is the current director of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) San Francisco Office, and came to Berkeley in April, 2022. Prior to this position, he was a professor at the Division of Neurofunctional Genomics, Department of Immunobiology and Neuroscience, Medical Institute of Bioregulation, Kyushu University, Japan since 1997. He has been exploring mechanisms protecting our genomes from damage caused by reactive oxygen species. He especially focuses on mutagenesis in proliferative cells and carcinogenesis, as well as cell death in postmitotic cells and neurodegeneration including Alzheimer’s disease. He was awarded the 2018 Kihara Prize of the Genetic Society of Japan for his study on “Defense mechanisms against the dysfunction resulting from damage to the genome by reactive oxygen species”. He graduated with a Doctor of Science degree from Kyushu University Graduate School of Science in 1984. He performed postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1987 to 1990. In 1997, he was appointed as a professor at Medical Institute of Bioregulation, Kyushu University, and elected as a Distinguished Professor of Kyushu University in 2010, and finally as a Professor Emeritus of Kyushu University in March 2022.
Yuki Ando

Yuki Ando is one of the current International Program Associates of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) San Francisco Office, and came to Berkeley in April, 2022. He received a Bachelor’s of Commerce from Otaru University of Commerce in 2014. Before accepting the role at JSPS in San Francisco, he was in charge of open recruitment of the JSPS fellowship standard program for one year in Japan. Prior to that, he was an administrative staff at Hokkaido University, in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. He has been working there for 7 years and in the most recent division he belonged to, he was in charge of the management of the research fund “KAKENHI” in the Institute of Low Temperature in Hokkaido University.
