Quick Details:
Mandatory Training October 16 & 17
Training is voluntary (unpaid)
Training includes a certificate of completion and snacks
The quarterly commitment is approximately 5-10 volunteer hours (total, after training)
One of the preferred methods for implementing The Body Project on college campuses is with the help of trained undergraduate peer leaders. The training also provides full details and advice for implementation of the program on your campus. The train-the-trainer model equips peer leaders to lead the program and staff/faculty to provide supervision and train future peer leaders. The beauty of this model is that it also minimizes the amount of time that faculty/staff need to devote to the program after implementation. It's a tried and tested model that works very well.
As a peer educator, you will be responsible for 16 hours of training in fall, and running at least one group (max of 3 groups) for the 2021-2022 academic year. Each group entails 4 1-hour group sessions, plus one hour of group prep work. You will work in teams of 2-3 peer educators and facilitate a group of 6-12 undergraduate women through the Body Project intervention. There is a script available for you to follow and the groups are designed to be fun and interactive.
If you are interested, please fill out the form below by Friday, October 8 at NOON. We will be accepting 12 peers for training based on the answers you provide: https://ucsb.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3skaVVAYGoCKYXH
More information about the Body Project
Backed by two decades of research and evaluation data, the Body Project is a group-based intervention that provides a forum for women to confront unrealistic beauty ideals and engages them in the development of healthy body image through verbal, written, and behavioral exercises. The Body Project was developed by researchers at Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Oregon Research Institute, and has been delivered to over one million young women around the world. This training will prepare the facilitator to distribute the Body Project to UCSB women in line with the evidence-based program.
During the Body Project, participants will:
Define the "appearance" ideal and explore its origin
Examine the costs of pursuing this ideal
Explore ways to resist pressures to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty
Discuss how to challenge personal body-related concerns
Learn new ways to talk more positively about our bodies
Talk about how we can best respond to future pressures to conform to societal standards of beauty
