DanceHaven

Created in collaboration with senior Gabrielle Niederhoffer and tap legend Dormeshia, DanceHaven brings dynamic dance styles rooted in Black vernacular dance traditions to YSC for a weekend of masterclasses and performances. Come experience tap, Chicago footwork, swing dance, African diasporic movement, and more!

This Masterclass

Dunham Contemporary Jazz with Candice Michelle Franklin will explore Katherine Dunham's technique and aesthetic, influence, and contribution to the progression of Jazz dance. This high-energy class will explore Dunham's movement vocabulary and traditional modern Jazz motifs used in Jazz dance to ultimately create a concert Jazz movement combination. The lesson will include a review of classic Dunham positions, her movement, and isolations, followed by lively, Dunham-inspired Jazz progressions and a final combo. This class features live accompaniment by the master percussionist, Philip Hamilton!
