ITW: Identity in the Classroom

Identity informs every aspect of how we teach and learn. In this workshop, we will discuss how different aspects of student and instructor identity–including race, gender, ethnicity, and religion–shape our learning experience. We will reflect on our own identities and positionality in the classroom, and will consider what our students bring to the learning environment. This workshop aims to begin a conversation about the formative role of identity in course design, assessment, and feedback, and lays the groundwork for additional ITWs and ATWs, such as Gender in the classroom, Practicing Anti -Racist Pedagogy, and others. Please note: Intermediate Teaching Workshops (ITWs) count toward the requirements for the Certificate of College Teaching Preparation (CCTP). They do not presuppose any previous engagement with the topic, but will draw on topics mentioned in the Fundamentals of Teaching/the CIRTL MOOC.
