Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic downturn since its Independence in 1948. Due to years of political corruption and irresponsible financial policies, the details of which have been articulated by analysts such as Yolani Fernando of The Asia Foundation, the country's foreign reserves have been depleted. This has translated to a humanitarian crisis, with energy and public health being the most affected sectors. Currently, citizens face severe fuel shortages, 13-hour power outages, skyrocketing basic goods prices, and low medical supplies. While the present situation has been created by years of bad governance and poor economic policy, the politicians responsible still continue to suppress people's freedom of expression by resorting to declaring emergency measures and shutting down social media.

Please join Yale South Asian Society and Sri Lankans at Yale for a teach-in on the crisis with speakers:

Dr. Kaushalya Perera, Lecturer at the University of Colombo
Bhavani Fonseka, constitutional lawyer and human rights activist in Sri Lanka
Iromi Perera, founder, Colombo Urban Lab
Udara Peiris, Professor of Finance at Oberlin College and Higher School of Economics, Moscow
Ambika Saktunanathan, Fellow, Open Society Foundations (2020-22), human rights advocate and former Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.

Raising funds and awareness within the Yale community is critical at this time. Please donate at http://gofundme.com/yaliesforsl to support people in Sri Lanka affected by this crisis. $1 USD = ~ 2 packets of food, so every dollar counts!
