In many genres of scholarly writing, we are asked to provide the context for our research, connect our research to existing problems, gaps, or scholarly conversations, and explain our project aims; this often occurs in the introduction. But how? In this interactive workshop, participants will learn strategies for planning and writing an introduction that positions one's research in rhetorically savvy ways. We will discuss some typical writing moves made in introductions, which apply to dissertations/theses, journal articles, and conference or research proposals. We will examine sample introductions and other resources, and participants will leave the workshop with an outlined plan for a current introduction they are drafting. This workshop will be most relevant to graduate students, but undergraduate students working on research are also welcome to attend.
