Join GEO to learn more about the Oxford Summer School program and the Oxford Semester Experience program for fall 2022.

Oxford Summer School: This popular summer program takes place over 3 weeks at the University of Oxford, one of the most prestigious academic universities in the world! With famous former undergraduates like J.R.R. Tolkien and campus locations that appear in the Harry Potter movies, Oxford boasts a fascinating history that dates all the way back to the 14th century. Don't miss the unique opportunity to attend summer classes at Oxford, a place whose beauty is sure to inspire you daily and leave you hungry to learn more. Students may participate in either the English Literature Program *OR* the History, Politics and Society Program. Both programs include daily lectures by leading scholars and distinguished speakers and accommodations at Exeter College, one of Oxford's oldest colleges.

Space is limited with a cap of 12 students per seminar. In previous years, a maximum of 3 Mason students have been accepted in each seminar on a first-come, first-serve basis.

English Literature Summer School:
  • Examine a variety of significant texts and literary movements from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day.
  • Offers seminars on Anglo-Saxon literature and culture, Shakespeare, the English Romantic poets, Jane Austen, Victorian fiction, Modernist fiction and contemporary literature

History, Politics, & Society Summer School:
  • Provides insight into issues and events that have influenced the contemporary world using a thematic approach
  • Offers seminars on British political history, the European Union, gender politics, globalisation, humanitarian crises, the Middle East, and modern warfare

Oxford Semester Experience: Launched in 1995, the Oxford Semester Experience is GEO's most prestigious program. Each semester, organized with our partner in Oxford, a small group of high achieving Mason undergraduate and graduate students are selected to study as affiliated students at one of a variety of Oxford colleges. The world-famous University of Oxford is the prestigious alma mater of many presidents and prime ministers.

Each semester consists of two parts: a traditional course taught by the attending Mason faculty (Academic Director) and the Oxford Term when students take part in traditional Oxford tutorials. Oxford's unique tutorial system gives participants unparalleled individual attention through weekly one-on-one meetings with an Oxford scholar. Each student is guided through an intellectual exploration of their chosen discipline. Oxford tutorials are designed as 1-on-1, or small group, intensive learning experiences between the Mason student and Oxford faculty.

Tutorials are offered in the social sciences, theoretical sciences, business, and the humanities. During tutorials, students are expected to do substantial independent library work and periodically produce written essays and oral presentations. At the close of the program, participants produce a portfolio of their work, which consists of a two-page reflection of their experience and copies of their tutorial work.
