Join the CLCE for a deliberative dialogue at the homes one of the most influential figures in the United States!

Our dialogue will focus on Free Speech & the Inclusive Campus, asking "How do we foster the campus community we want?"
The United States is becoming increasingly diverse and more polarized as we struggle to address complex public problems such as immigration, health care, economic inequality, and America's role in the world (Pew Research Center, 2017). As public trust in our political system waivers, U.S. college campuses are grappling with issues of inclusion, diversity, and freedom of speech (Rainie, Keeter, & Perrin, 2019). In today's contentious and divided political environment, what should colleges and universities do to meet the roles and responsibilities of higher education to foster the campus community we want?

After the dialogue, we will take a free guided tour of the Susan B. Anthony House and have a free catered lunch by Café 1872. This café is located where Susan B. Anthony cast her ballot in 1872 (before women had the federal right to vote!).

Free transportation will be provided. For those driving themselves, please email Grace Carlic at gacrli@rit.edu.

Based on the National Issues Forums model for deliberative dialogues, the goal of Horizons is to promote active listening and dialogue rather than debate on difficult topics. In a space where students, faculty, and staff can approach what may seem like a difficult conversation in a respectful, educational, and constructive manner, attendees will come away with a greater understanding of others who hold diverse views and be able to form an educated opinion on challenging and complex issues our society faces today.
