Away from home, students often struggle to find where they belong, both on campus and within broader society. This talk will emphasize the importance of understanding our history to inform the progression of our morals, values, and careers. We will focus specifically on building robust cultural communities centering history and contemporary social issues, using Taara—a student organization for South Asian women and gender minorities—as a case study. With its three-pronged focus on cultural intersectionality, global relationships, and gender dynamics, Taara prepares its members to engage in culturally relevant advocacy and activism. After this workshop, participants will have developed a framework for building lasting cultural communities, integrating historical perspectives into student life, and strengthening advocacy efforts for marginalized groups.
