Negotiating Conflict Along the Academic Journey: Navigating Relationships With Advisors and Research Teams in the STEM Fields

Did you know negotiating conflict is one of the most critical competencies graduate students need to advance in their academic programs and careers? Have you experienced conflict with an advisor or within your research team? Have you experienced challenges negotiating with your advisor/mentor the pivotal turns in your career?

Negotiating conflict is a common challenge for graduate students. According to the American Psychological Association, learning to negotiate conflict with your advisor, faculty members and/or research collaborators is an important skill that will allow graduate students to navigate training, research and the dissertation process with greater success (Psychological Science Agenda, APA, 2018, https://www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2018/11/negotiating-conflicts).

Acquiring the competencies to manage conflict, find common ground to collaborate and negotiate toward your goals with your advisor and others is a critical skill for succeeding in your academic career.

Part 1

Join us for a 2-hour workshop called: Negotiating Conflict Along the Academic Journey: Navigating Relationships With Advisors and Research Teams in the STEM Fields. The broad goals of the workshop will be to:

  1. To explore common scenarios PhD candidates encounter while working with their advisors and research teams, pursuing their research, as well as preparing their dissertations;

  2. To acquire valuable strategies for navigating the academic journey and working toward greater success in collaborations and relationships; and

  3. To build a safe and supportive community within which PhD candidates can explore tough dilemmas.

  • Monday, October 4, 1:00PM - 3:00PM (for for advanced to candidacy Nursing PhD students)

Part 2

Participants may also opt to participate in an associated research study which will offer an opportunity to receive coaching with a certified coach, which will focus on navigating and negotiating conflict in your academic career, in a small supportive peer group.

The program is offered as part of a wider research study to understand how PhD students and postdoctoral scholars learn and implement strategies for navigating differences and negotiating conflict in their research teams and with their advisors. The purpose of this research is to assess how well aspects of the workshop and coaching help participants develop and implement strategies for navigating as well as negotiating conflict.

**Students who complete the entire program (Parts 1 & 2) will receive a $50 Amazon gift card**

We ask that you are engaged and committed to the process in attitude and effort. Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the entire program, from your survey responses, to your workshop participation, and during the coaching process.
