PEAK Speaks: Julia Alvarez

Join us for the PEAK kickoff with our guest speaker Julia Alvarez.

With her bachelor's degree in international studies from Kenyon College and her masters in international peace studies from the United Nations mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica, Julia is passionate about social justice and about capacity building.

Bringing nearly 15 years of experience in fundraising, grantwriting, leadership development and nonprofit capacity building to her work with Youth on Record, Julia is thrilled to finally have an opportunity to blend her passion for organizational development with her love of music, positive youth development and social justice. When Julia was 8-years-old, her entire family of five joined a traveling musical theater production chronicling the revolution in Nicaragua…After this, she was hooked!

In addition to being a singer and a beginner mandolin player, Julia has spent her career working in youth development, international development and social justice fields. Outside of her work, Julia stays connected to her Colorado community as the Chair of the Commission of the Denver Office of Strategic Partnerships, a government agency working to increase and enhance public/private partnerships in the City of Denver. Julia also loves spending time hiking, camping, exploring the mountains, and enjoying the sunshine in Denver.

Please join us for the first session in a day of wonderful presenters, and don't forget to sign up for events later in the day!

PEAK Leadership Experience: You Can Take It With You: Transferable Leadership Skills

When transitioning through different roles or even career fields in general, it's easy to feel that any skills you gained in your previous role will no longer be applicable. However, no experience is wasted experience, and this session will show attendees that leadership is a universal component in any career. The thing you might actually want to do could be hiding in your subconscious, shaped by your inner values!

PEAK Leadership Experience: Exploring the Absent: A review of laissez-faire leadership

Welcome to the PEAK Leadership Experience! This is a day-long event with so many fantastic presentations, and this is just one of them!

Session Description: Even with the laissez-faire leadership style emerging as a predominantly used leadership style, it is still understudied compared to its counterparts, such as transformative and transactional leadership styles. This session provides an integrative and comprehensive review of 945 articles on laissez-faire leadership spanning almost a century (1939 – 2020). It will review historical approaches used to measure laissez-faire leadership and provides a recommendation for new measures. It maps the theoretical and nomological network of laissez-faire leadership concerning its antecedents, outcomes, moderators, and mediators. It then concludes by providing recommendations to scholars and practitioners for future advancement on the topic.

PEAK Leadership Experience: Lead by Example: Giving, Receiving & Learning from Feedback

Welcome to the PEAK Leadership Experience! This is a day-long event with so many fantastic presentations, and this is just one of them!

This workshop is based on the book "Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well" by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen (https://www.amazon.com/Thanks-Feedback-Science-Receiving-Well/dp/0670014664). We will discuss why we know getting feedback is crucial and why it still can feel so icky – what's behind that tension? We will then review specific frameworks for how you can give feedback, how you can take it, and how you can make the most of it, as well as practice feedback dialogue in small groups.

PEAK Leadership Experience: Using Empathy to Plan for Impact

Welcome to the PEAK Leadership Experience! This is a day-long event with so many fantastic presentations, and this is just one of them!

Many people, and particularly students, in problem-solving roles will jump straight to the how without giving much thought or examination to the what or the why of their problem. Empathy, as part of the larger Design Thinking Process, can serve as a valuable tool to help understand your problem and your audience better, which will result in much more effective solutions.
