The Nontraditional Approach: Self-Empowerment in Green Haven Prison

The Green Haven Prison Project and the Visual Law Project at Yale Law School are thrilled to share footage from an in-progress documentary that spotlights a decades-long program run by men incarcerated at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York. The program, called the Project for a Calculated Transition, or PACT, uses "The Nontraditional Approach" to prepare its members to re-enter society and become leaders in their communities. PACT has had a transformative impact on people inside and outside prison, including incarcerated individuals inside Green Haven and generations of Yale law students who have visited and participated in PACT since 1979.

In this event, the Green Haven Prison Project and Visual Law Project will screen footage for the in-progress documentary, which details what PACT does and illustrates its impact. Then, a panel of individuals featured in the film will discuss their experience in PACT and the power of programming run by and for incarcerated individuals. Our panelists include Roy Bolus, the former President of PACT, JoAnne Page, President & CEO of The Fortune Society, and Jose Saldaña, Director for the Release Aging People in Prison campaign.
